Job Market News
Overlogix: We tend to pay little attention to job market forecasts, nor to market pundits, since they are often wrong and there are so many incentives to skew the numbers for business and / or political reasons. However, readers are interested, and so we’ll provide a few, heavily curated stories on the topic.
News stories on the job market recently have felt a little on the “meh” side. We noticed, and are working on better job hunting tactics and strategies. Stand by for our upcoming article, long in coming, on unconventional job hunting tactics. The old ways don’t work well anymore, and the new ways are largely undocumented. We’ll try to fix that in the next week or so.
How The Class Of 2025 Can Thrive In Today’s Uncertain Job Market 27.04.2025 “Gen Z has already shown adaptability, jumping over employment hurdle after hurdle, and their future is still uncertain.
As the Class of 2025 prepares to enter the world of work, the latest jobs report offers some insight to what’s going on in the market.”
Jobless claims edged up, showing labor market steady as tariffs bite 24.04.2025
· “Claims for unemployment benefits edged up in mid-April, showing that the global tariffs announced by President Donald Trump early this month posed no immediate setback to payrolls or the broader U.S. labor market.
· Jobless claims increased by 6,000 for a total of 222,000 during the week ended April 19, the Labor Department said Thursday, remaining within a narrow range during the past two months.
· So-called continuing claims, which indicate the number of people receiving unemployment benefits, fell to 1.84 million in the week ended April 12, or 37,000 fewer than the previous week’s level”
Understanding America’s Labor Shortage 18.04.2025 “We hear every day from our member companies—of every size and industry, across nearly every state—that they’re facing challenges trying to find enough workers to fill open jobs.
The U.S. Chamber is capturing the trends on job openings, labor force participation, quit rates, and more for a quick understanding of the state of the workforce in our America Works Data Center. Read on for an analysis of the state of the workforce on the national level.”
Current Topics of Interest
We take a little time to note articles of interest, on subjects often out of the mainstream, often overlooked. In the last two weeks, we’ve noted several stories of great interest to us, and likely to our readers, as well.
The end of the annoying and largely fake and toxic so-called “influencer culture” appears to be upon us, and good riddance to really bad garbage.
Windows 11 has a controversial feature called “Windows Recall” that has some writers up in arms about privacy and security; it looks as though Microsoft noticed the blow-back and might have mitigated some of the worst aspects of this “feature”. We advise caution and disabling the feature until proper research, independent of Microsoft’s claims, can be done by individual users.
Last, we link to an interesting video with Ira Baxter, CEO of the formidable Semantic Designs corporation. Readers who might be contemplating a modernization of an aging code base are invited to dig deep. We know Ira rather well, have worked with him on several occasions in the past, and love his depth of insight into scaled maintenance, testing and modernization of massive code bases. Semantic Designs makes software to handle these beasts, and has for more than two decades. Highly recommended!
Influencer Culture: Is the end in sight?
Why the end of obnoxious influencer culture may finally have arrived 12.04.2025 “Influencers — those obnoxious (and increasingly) political hype beasts who’ve defined much of internet life in the last decade — may finally be going the way of the Apple Watch: once a flashy trendsetter, now a garish relic.”
Influencer Culture and Authenticity (undated, 2025) “So firstly, what even is an influencer? Well if you’ve been living under a rock for the last several years you may not know what I’m banging on about… or you might just not care. Fair. Influencers, by definition, are individuals who have the ability to affect the purchasing decisions of others due to their authority, knowledge, position, or relationship with their audience. They often create content that resonates with their followers, building a sense of community and trust. The appeal of influencers lies in their perceived relatability and authenticity—qualities that traditional advertising often lacks.”
The Psychology of Influencer Culture: How Social Media Influencers Impact Behavior and Self-Perception (undated) “Moreover, influencers often cultivate a sense of pseudo – social relationships, where followers feel a one-sided emotional connection to them. Unlike traditional celebrities who are often distant, influencers share intimate glimpses of their daily lives, allowing followers to feel as though they truly know them. This bond increases trust, making followers more receptive to the content and products influencers promote.”
Microsoft Security: Windows users: read this immediately!
Microsoft makes delayed AI Recall feature available 25.04.2025 “Catch up quick: Recall, which works by feeding its screenshots of everything a user sees into AI models, was quickly criticized by security experts who warned the approach presented safety and privacy risks — even though the AI is designed to only run locally on the user's computer.
Microsoft made a number of tweaks, including requiring biometric authentication and encrypting the data.
Recall is now opt-in, and users can choose which apps use the feature and which do not.
The changes took time, though, and the resulting delay forced Microsoft to spend last year focusing on the performance and battery life of Copilot+ PCs instead of their AI wizardry.”
Overlogix: We do not recommend using this feature without knowing exactly what you are doing. It is turned on by default. Here’s the official story from Microsoft on how to control it. If you don’t have time to thoroughly research it, a matter of hours, we believe it best to turn the damned thing off.
Stealing everything you’ve ever typed or viewed on your own Windows PC is now possible with two lines of code — inside the Copilot+ Recall disaster. 31.05.2024 This is an older article, still showing up as a reference on LinkedIn feeds. The subroutine in question is recall, which apparently is embedded in Windows 11 Copilot.
If true, and we will research this matter further, Microsoft can (and probably will) spy on any and all Windows 11 users. We find this outrageous, and yet another motivation to research quality Linux alternatives for workstations. Stay tuned, as we intend to review Linux alternatives prior to the drop-dead date for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025.
Windows 11: Other annoyances 14.04.2027 While not as important, many users are unhappy with Windows 11’s persistent upselling of various Microsoft products. We always opt for the Professional version of Windows, (usually) avoiding the adware, junk software bundling and bloat of the Home edition. Pro tip: Linux distributions historically have very low to no advertising, at all. Our opinion: operating systems are a tool for us (the customers) to use, not a vehicle for advertising.
Modernizing Legacy Code
Modernizing Legacy Code at Scale: How Semantic Designs Tackles 10M+ Line Migrations w CEO Ira Baxter 24.04.2024 (video) “What if you had to modernize 10 million lines of COBOL—and failure wasn’t an option?
In this episode of "Pitch, Build, Scale," Chris Fanchi sits down with Ira Baxter, CEO of Semantic Designs, a true pioneer in software transformation. Ira has spent decades building tools that help enterprise giants like Dow Chemical, NASA, and Northrop Grumman migrate and maintain massive legacy systems.
Ira unpacks the realities of legacy modernization: the myths of AI-driven code translation, the hidden costs of maintenance, and why regression testing is the unsung hero of transformation success. He also explains why COBOL isn't dead—and how compiler theory and algebraic transformation still shape the future of software engineering.
Whether you're a CTO, software architect, or just fascinated by big systems and even bigger challenges, this episode is a masterclass in modernizing at scale.”
Semantic Designs is a past customer of ours and possibly a future one. We’ve known Ira for years. No one does huge software overhauls like them; they’ve built incredible tools for analyzing massive codebases, finding unused (dead) code, test case coverage (how well the testing covers the functioning of the software), and, importantly, modernizing giant code bases from legacy code (and architecture) to modern ones. This is a fascinating video window into how to handle gigantic amounts of old code, find and fix bugs, and keep it working.
Technology News
General Technology News
What’s happening in tech since we last published:
Grid-Scale Battery Storage Is Quietly Revolutionizing the Energy System 26.04.2025 “This energy storage technology is harnessing the potential of solar and wind power—and its deployment is growing exponentially.
The tricky thing about generating electricity is that for the most part, you pretty much have to use it or lose it.”
Elon Musk's xAI Holdings in talks to raise $20 billion from investors, Bloomberg News reports 25.04.2025 “Elon Musk's xAI Holdings is in talks with investors to raise roughly $20 billion in funding for his newly combined artificial intelligence startup and social media business, Bloomberg News reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The transaction would value the company at more than $120 billion, the report said, citing one of the people”
Apple May Shift to Making US iPhones in India. It Won’t Be Easy 25.04.2025 “Manufacturers in India would need to double production to meet US iPhone demand—and the shift still wouldn’t solve Apple’s China problem.”
‘You Can’t Lick a Badger Twice’: Google Failures Highlight a Fundamental AI Flaw 23.04.2025 Heh. We tried this with several nonsense phrases, including “Reverse Vacuum Imploder meaning” and ‘You Can’t Lick a Badger Twice’ meaning, and couldn’t reproduce the results, meaning that Google probably realized it had a flop on its hands and has quietly disabled the feature. Probably a good thing, since the AI search wasn’t very good. When we need to do a deep dive on a particular topic, we almost always go to Perplexity. Grok seems to do a pretty good job digging up web results as well.
Litmus test for chip stocks as investors gird for TSMC earnings 17.04.2025 “Investors are bracing for the results from Taiwan's TSMC (2330.TW), opens new tab on Thursday to show further evidence of the wide-ranging uncertainty in the chip industry spurred by U.S. President Donald Trump's trade policies.
Chip stocks across the globe have suffered this year as investor jitters about spending on AI infrastructure, the threat of competition after Chinese startup DeepSeek's launch, and, in recent weeks, fears around U.S. tariffs have sapped sentiment.”
Exclusive: Nvidia kept some China customers in the dark about new US chip clampdown, sources say 17.04.2025 “Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab did not warn at least some major customers in advance about new U.S. export rules it was told about a week ago requiring it to obtain licenses to sell its China-focused artificial intelligence chip, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
The U.S. chipmaker disclosed on Tuesday that American officials had informed the company on April 9 that its H20 chip would require an export license for sales to China.”
‘Stupid and Dangerous’: CISA Funding Chaos Threatens Essential Cybersecurity Program 16.04.2025 “The CVE Program is the primary way software vulnerabilities are tracked. Its long-term future remains in limbo even after a last-minute renewal of the US government contract that funds it.”
Will Meta Really Have to Sell Instagram and WhatsApp? 16.04.2025 “The trial between the US Federal Trade Commission and Meta began this week—and the future of the company is at stake. The FTC wants Meta to sell off two prized assets, Instagram and WhatsApp, arguing that it acquired them illegally to suppress competition. Today on the show, senior writer Paresh Dave joins host Zoë Schiffer to discuss what we know right now about the government’s case—and what we learned when Mark Zuckerberg took the stand Monday.”
AMD expects $800 million hit from U.S. chip restrictions on China 16.04.2025 “Shares of Advanced Micro Devices closed down more than 7% on Wednesday after the company said it could incur charges of up to $800 million for exporting its MI308 products to China and other countries.
‘The Company expects to apply for licenses but there is no assurance that licenses will be granted,’ AMD said in the filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The new U.S. license requirement, which applies to exports of certain semiconductor products, would hit inventory, purchase commitments and related reserves, AMD said in the filing.”
Critical chip firm ASML misses order expectations amid tariff uncertainty 16.04.2025 “Dutch semiconductor equipment giant ASML on Wednesday missed order expectations and said that uncertainty from new U.S. trade restrictions may affect demand for its critical chipmaking machines.”
Apple airlifted iPhones worth a record $2 billion from India in March as Trump tariffs loomed 15.04.2025 “Apple’s main India suppliers Foxconn and Tata shipped nearly $2 billion worth of iPhones to the United States in March, an all-time high, as the U.S. company airlifted devices to bypass President Donald Trump’s impending tariffs, customs data shows.”
Artificial Intelligence News
Happenings in the wild world of artificial intelligence:
Coalition opposes OpenAI shift from nonprofit roots 24.04.2025 “A coalition of experts, including former OpenAI employees, has voiced strong opposition to the company’s shift away from its nonprofit roots.
In an open letter addressed to the Attorneys General of California and Delaware, the group – which also includes legal experts, corporate governance specialists, AI researchers, and nonprofit representatives – argues that the proposed changes fundamentally threaten OpenAI’s original charitable mission.
OpenAI was founded with a unique structure. Its core purpose, enshrined in its Articles of Incorporation, is ‘to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity’ rather than serving ‘the private gain of any person.’”
Alarming rise in AI-powered scams: Microsoft reveals $4 Billion in thwarted fraud 24.04.2025 “AI-powered scams are evolving rapidly as cybercriminals use new technologies to target victims, according to Microsoft’s latestCyber Signals report.
Over the past year, the tech giant says it has prevented $4 billion in fraud attempts, blocking approximately 1.6 million bot sign-up attempts every hour – showing the scale of this growing threat.
The ninth edition of Microsoft’s Cyber Signals report, titled “AI-powered deception: Emerging fraud threats and countermeasures,” reveals how artificial intelligence has lowered the technical barriers for cybercriminals, enabling even low-skilled actors to generate sophisticated scams with minimal effort.
What previously took scammers days or weeks to create can now be accomplished in minutes.
The democratization of fraud capabilities represents a shift in the criminal landscape that affects consumers and businesses worldwide.”
Overlogix: The only way this is going to stop is with vigorous law enforcement and harsh penalties for perpetrators. State-sanctioned cybercrime (and you know who they are) should be seriously considered for elevation to a casus belli.
How do you define cheating in the age of AI? 24.04.2025 “This AI startup raised $5.3 million to help people “cheat on everything.” But in the age of AI, how do you define cheating?”
The evolution of harmful content detection: Manual moderation to AI 22.04.2025 “The battle to keep online spaces safe and inclusive continues to evolve.
As digital platforms multiply and user-generated content expands very quickly, the need for effective harmful content detection becomes paramount. What once relied solely on the diligence of human moderators has given way to agile, AI-powered tools reshaping how communities and organisations manage toxic behaviours in words and visuals.”
Overlogix: If you believe, as we already know, that social media can be very harmful for kids, AI can be orders of magnitude worse. While we use it all the time for (sometimes unreliable) research and answers to questions we have, it’s easy to see that, for example, using an AI to write an assignment for a school project robs students of necessary practice in research and writing. Widespread use of AI for cheating is only one of several problems; there is also the matter of kids using AI to advise them (yikes!). We recommend parents monitor their kids online activity closely, and intervene when things look harmful for them.
Learning to live with AI 20.04.2025 Glenn Reynolds from Instapundit meditates on the current state of AI, finding, as we have, that it’s good for some things, and constantly improving, but certainly no panacea. Smart people use judgement to decide what AI is good for and what it is not, usually by direct experiment.
Our take: the near future is going to be more of the same. Proper and intelligent use of AI can save time with some tasks, but it simply cannot replace human beings, because it can’t create, doesn’t understand anything, despite appearing to, and so is effectively a minor multiplier, an assistant, to help speed up some fraction of tasks. It is also unreliable and likely to stay so, necessitating rigorous testing of its output.
That need for testing AI results is an unavoidable cost that claws back much of the advantage of using AI in the first place. Users fail to check AI results carefully at their peril. Thinking of it as an enthusiastic, but highly error-prone assistant, and checking everything, is the only way to put AI to practical use.
Washington Takes Aim at DeepSeek and Its American Chip Supplier, Nvidia 16.04.2025 “China’s success in artificial intelligence has the Trump administration and lawmakers weighing rules and investigations to slow Beijing’s progress in the industry.”
Task-Specific AI to Overtake General AI by 2027, Gartner Reports 16.04.2025 “A new Gartner report finds that by 2027, organizations will use task-specific AI models three times more than general-purpose large language models.
According to the report, while general-purpose LLMs have robust language capabilities, their response accuracy declines for tasks that require an understanding of specific business domains. As such, businesses are focusing more on customized models that can handle specific needs.”
Overlogix: Agreed. AGI isn’t even defined and has never been a profitable business undertaking. Narrow AI is where the true, profitable business applications live. We hope that investors eventually understand this, too, as the massive investments in the Mag7, to us, have been a huge mis-allocation of resources.
Apple AI stresses privacy with synthetic and anonymised data 15.04.2025 “Apple is taking a new approach to training its AI models – one that avoids collecting or copying user content from iPhones or Macs.
According to a recent blog post, the company plans to continue to rely on synthetic data (constructed data that is used to mimic user behaviour) and differential privacy to improve features like email summaries, without gaining access to personal emails or messages”
Meta will train AI models using EU user data 15.04.2025 “Meta has confirmed plans to utilise content shared by its adult users in the EU (European Union) to train its AI models.
The announcement follows the recent launch of Meta AI features in Europe and aims to enhance the capabilities and cultural relevance of its AI systems for the region’s diverse population.”
Nvidia to Make AI Supercomputers Entirely in U.S. 14.04.2025 “The company is working with Foxconn on a supercomputer plant in Houston”
Why AI Might Not Take All Our Jobs—if We Act Quickly 14.04.2025 “Will AI augment our work and help us? Or automate our work and take our jobs?
Massachusetts Institute of Technology economist Sendhil Mullainathan, 53, makes the point that AI isn’t a thing that is happening to humans but a thing that humans are making. We have a choice about what kind of technology it becomes.”
OpenAI counter-sues Elon Musk for attempts to ‘take down’ AI rival 10.04.2025 “OpenAI has launched a legal counteroffensive against one of its co-founders, Elon Musk, and his competing AI venture, xAI.
In court documents filed yesterday, OpenAI accuses Musk of orchestrating a “relentless” and “malicious” campaign designed to “take down OpenAI” after he left the organisation years ago.
Elon’s nonstop actions against us are just bad-faith tactics to slow down OpenAI and seize control of the leading AI innovations for his personal benefit. Today, we counter-sued to stop him.”
If Anthropic Succeeds, a Nation of Benevolent AI Geniuses Could Be Born 28.03.2025 “The brother goes on vision quests. The sister is a former English major. Together, they defected from OpenAI, started Anthropic, and built (they say) AI’s most upstanding citizen, Claude.” We like Claude, but we don’t use it that much due to the relatively short sessions allowed with the free tier. It also forgets the context, requiring wasting one precious prompt to craft a reminder paragraph so the context can be picked up again later. Inefficient. Grok is more forgiving in this respect, and when a conversation comes to an abrupt halt, it can be picked up again after about two hours, with Grok automatically remembering the previous conversation.
Classical (Non-AI) Automation News
Industrial robots, non-AI automation programming and tech advances in manufacturing:
How Can You Use Edge Computing to Your Advantage? 25.04.2025 “Edge computing provides manufacturers with predictive maintenance solutions, operational security and more. After reading about all its benefits, take this quiz to test your knowledge.”
Automotive Robotics Market Projected to Surpass $38.4B by 2034 25.04.2025 “The Automotive Robotics Market is set to grow from its current market value of more than $9.7 Billion to over $38.4 Billion by 2034; as reported in the latest study by Global Market Insights, Inc.
This surge is driven by the increasing reliance on automation to streamline automotive manufacturing, improve efficiency and enhance production quality. The integration of robotics into the industry ensures greater consistency, reduces errors and boosts productivity, with automation becoming essential in key operations such as assembly, welding and material handling.”
The Hyper-Automated Factories of 2040 24.04.2025 “When I think about what factories will look like in 2040, my money is on hyper-automation. In these factories, AI systems will self-optimize operations in real-time and production lines will flex instantly to meet demands. As for factory workers, they will have moved from manual labor to primarily overseeing processes and optimizing technology and automation”
Engineered for Sustainability: The New Blueprint for Robot Design 22.04.2025 “In the world of robot manufacturing, efficiency has always been king. Faster cycle times, greater precision and maximum output have long dictated how industrial robots are designed. But today, a new measure of success is emerging: sustainability. Let's explore three key factors shaping sustainable robot design.”
How to Incorporate AI Agents into Your Automation Strategy 21.04.2024 “Everyone’s talking about AI agents, and with good reason. The promise of AI agents comes down to their ability to act independently and even make decisions based on complex reasoning.
Using AI agents in your automation strategy seems like a natural step, but if they’re not properly integrated into your end-to-end processes, they may not work as well as you’d like them to—or at all. The goal should be to make your processes more efficient and/or minimize repetitive human tasks.”
Overlogix: We’re more than a little leery of AI agents, even though they are the natural route to using AI as a part of automation. One report we read flatly stated that AI agents struggle with automation tasks. Clearly, utility of an agent depends on the application and the particular agent chosen, and shouldn’t be used for mission-critical tasks until thoroughly tested under real-world conditions.
We’ll hazard a guess that matching a particular task with an appropriate agent is a fairly formidable task, likely to slow adoption. That’s a good thing, given the huge number of AI agents that have become available in only the last six months. We suspect many of them have been slapped together in a desperate attempt to maintain investor interest, now that “AGI” development has plateaued.
Ati Motors to Showcase Cutting-Edge Autonomous Mobile Robots at Automate 2025 16.04.2025 “Ati Motors, a global leader in autonomous robotics and AI-driven solutions, is proud to announce its participation in Automate 2025, the premier event for automation and robotics professionals, taking place from May 12-15 at Huntington Place in Detroit, Michigan. Visitors are invited to explore Ati Motors' innovative product lineup at booth #1823, where the company will be showcasing four impressive autonomous mobile robots (AMRs): the Sherpa Pallet Mover, Sherpa 10K, Sherpa Lifter and Sherpa XT Lite.”

We’ve been gathering the more successful of these and will publish them soon.
Installation and configuration of Microsoft SQL Server in Linux This project, like the below Gemini migration, demonstrates a practical use for AGI candidates like Claude. We asked Claude to help us through this unfamiliar topic and documented the results. Since we need this for a client, the installation is rather urgent and so has been prioritized.
Migration project using Google Gemini to produce the implementation and configuration steps. We’ve been developing, for our own purposes, an internal wiki built on the same platform as Wikipedia, MediaWiki. The interesting part is that we’re using Google Gemini as our research concierge and assistant for this project. The wiki has outgrown the el-cheapo XAMPP Windows installation and must be migrated to our newly rebuilt Linux server.

LinkedIn Free Version: An Analysis for Small Businesses 10.3.2025 This article sets expectations for SMBs using the default, free LinkedIn edition. There is still some business utility left after Microsoft monetized most of LinkedIn’s classic features, but for the most part, LinkedIn is firmly in the “pay to play” category, and likely to stay so. We don’t recommend paying LinkedIn for anything, absent very thorough research; their services are considered expensive and of utility only for larger firms with big advertising budgets.
Windows Security 101 17.2.2025 Three actions that can be performed quickly to boost security of Windows systems. Strongly recommended for all Windows users.
