Why the Move to Substack?
We take a detailed look at the free version of LinkedIn in this in-depth article. the TL;DR version is that the LI article editor lacks the features Substack has, including internal document navigation. LinkedIn’s monetization of nearly every useful function has robbed the free version of serious business utility for all but a handful of marketing purposes, detailed in the article. Add massive non-business noise, fussy robots, censorship, oddball and frequent, unprofessional user behavior to the mix, and LinkedIn has become a disaster waiting to happen.
We’re two days late publishing this edition, in part because of the move and the newsletter’s length. We’re still refining our content gathering and curation process, and hope to have that house in order by the next edition, scheduled for Sunday, 23 March 2025. We hope to be able to keep to the schedule.
In the meantime, ladies and gents, here’s the news.

Update: Breaking News: Has the AI Bubble Finally Popped?
Microsoft and OpenAI appear to be parting ways
We just saw a post about this on LinkedIn, and found the stories referred to on X. Details below.
It’s fairly clear this break-up is in the early stages, and that the parties still have significant mutual entanglements. OpenAI still has other options, although, from the looks of what we’ve seen, Microsoft is driving the split, apparently for excellent reasons.
This split potentially marks the beginning of the long-anticipated crash in artificial intelligence. OpenAI has lost a lot of effective executive staff, continues to be almost completely unprofitable, has floated some truly crazy pricing notions recently, does not appear to have any clear notion of how to attain profitability, relies far too heavily on investor money for its valuation and persists in a truly quixotic quest to produce artificial general intelligence, at a time when the only known profitable AIs are all narrow AIs, densely trained to perform one or a few tasks repeatably and reliably.
This appears to us to be a leadership problem. OpenAI’s board fired Sam Altman once, only to have him re-instated days later after pressure from employees and investors. From where we stand, that re-instatement was likely a serious error, one that could take down the entire industry and vaporize nearly trillions of dollars in investor money.
DeepSeek
DeepSeek is experiencing large-scale bans, with more to come. We have opined previously that we think their online models are in effect information gathering (read: spy) tools, with the CCP as the ultimate receiver of the data. As yet, we haven’t read much analysis of their strictly local model, i.e. the downloadable model one can run on one’s own machine, without going through the Internet. Until we do, we’re dumping that version in the same bucket: spyware.
We did take the trouble to ask one of our AI zoo whether malware could be hidden in the billions of weights in an AI model. The answer was, “of course!”. Malware needn’t be large, and so it is entirely possible to hide malware code as part of an AI model’s pre-training, along with additional code to later assemble the code and potentially run it on a user’s computer, without their knowledge.
We should point out that such a thing is not limited to DeepSeek; any AI model can potentially hide malware, and the attack can be so quick and subtle that the user never knows it happened. For this reason, we now recommend, even for users of local AI, to go through one’s existing files very carefully and thoroughly, and encrypt all important data that someone might want to steal.
Proactive and aggressive security practices are essential self-defense for all modern computer users. We have now written an article loaded with more than 45 sources of security information, directed at users of the Windows operating system, and another with three important security measures everyone should implement immediately.
Job Market News: Overview
Overlogix: We tend to pay little attention to job market forecasts, since there are so many incentives to skew the numbers for business and / or political reasons, and they are often dead wrong. However, readers are interested, and so we’ll provide a few, heavily curated stories on the topic.
As we have shared several times in the past, we believe there are a number of issues depressing hiring. In the UK and Europe, heavy-handed, paternalistic government regulations have stifled business over a long time. While President Trump is taking a machete to the US government, he has a very long period of frenzied hacking to go before he makes substantial inroads into deep state America.
In the meantime, there are still spaghetti regulations to untangle, bad tax law to fix, and plenty of deep state goons to fire, so the job market likely won’t recover in the US until late this year or early next year. We’re sorry for that, folks; the long term lesson to learn (or unlearn) is to be very cautious about voting. Government will grow and overwhelm the people, unless they exercise their franchise responsibilities wisely.
United Kingdom
The UK, never numerically 100% enthusiastic about Brexit, still has not been able to leverage their freedom from the EU in any big way, and now sports a decidedly left-leaning government, bad news for both business and employment. Tax burdens are onerous and, in the opinion of many Brits, outrageously high. High net-worth individuals have been leaving the UK in droves.
Despite the widespread unpopularity of the current Labour government, we do not see a change likely for some time, and so believe that Britain will remain in economic stagnation for the foreseeable future. The UK needs their own, modern version of Margaret Thatcher to thoroughly clean house.
Germany
The EU is overregulated in general. Germany, in particular, is suffering an industrial meltdown, mostly the result of a long history of unfortunate government decisions, and, in the last few years, the loss of cheap Russian gas. While we applaud Germany’s decision not to bow to Russia’s attempted energy blackmail, they didn’t have a good energy generation plan B, an unforced and rather surprising omission.
We’ve read that the German government is re-considering its nuclear policies. Unfortunately, nuclear power plants are both incredibly expensive and take a long time to build. Moreover, German nuclear expertise, critical for safe, large-scale nuclear power generation, has by now gone partially stale and will have to be re-developed. It is to be hoped that the new center-right government will take a hard look at what ails industry and aggressively addresses the many issues involved. Germany was at one time the economic powerhouse of the EU; we hope it returns some day to that status.
United States
The US job market is going through some short-term job losses due to Trump’s cleanout of wasteful and unnecessary government spending. There already have been suspensions, layoffs and firings of government employees; this trend is expected to pick up steam throughout the year.
When that happens in large numbers, some former government employees will find new jobs in either the government or industry. However, for the short term, government reductions in force can be expected to inject large numbers of job seekers into an already poor job market, further exacerbating the pain felt by those seeking employment.
N.B.: Like a lot of western governments, the USG became addicted to unsustainable spending levels. Withdrawal symptoms can be expected and will happen.
Another issue with government intervention in the economy is the US tax code Section 174 problem, forcing amortization of research costs, including labor costs, over five years instead of the year the expenses were incurred. We’re unsure of exactly what “research” means in the context of taxation, nor of the impact of this particular legislative glitch, however, cutting-edge technology, one of America’s strong points historically, has a high fraction of research costs relative to legacy industries. This taxation glitch likely has a significant effect on hiring and retention.
Job Market News
It’s getting ‘uncomfortably difficult’ to find a job. Here are the bright spots in this labor market. 08.03.2025 “Even before the release of Friday’s employment report, the labor market was beginning to test the nerves of America’s job hunters.
Now that the numbers are in, experts say there isn’t much that will counter the queasiness for those who are looking for a job. In other words: Don’t start chugging the Pepto-Bismol, but keep it handy.
‘It remains uncomfortably difficult for unemployed people who want a job to quickly find one,” said Cory Stahle, an economist at Indeed Hiring Lab.’”
Overlogix: As we have pointed out many times, the trades still seem to be doing fine. There is high demand, high pay and reasonable prospects for long-term, steady employment. More importantly, many skilled trades have much shorter learning curves than four-year degree programs, so workers can start earning good money rapidly.
Who needs toxic, layoff-happy white-collar office work when you can start working quickly, earn good money, and then forget about your job when you go home? Best of all: no crushing student debt. This one is a no-brainer. Learn welding, plumbing, construction, machining, take your pick. Get some basic training (inexpensive, try your local community college) and then get to work. Go where the money is, forget the high-tech desert. Problem: solved.
Why Today’s Youth Are Embracing Skilled Trades Over Four-Year Colleges 25.09.2024 “The shift toward trade schools has significantly impacted the construction industry in addressing one of the industry’s biggest challenges: a shortage of qualified, skilled workers.“
Skilled trade workers are still in short supply 06.11.2024 “The Fed publishes its Beige Book eight times per year. It’s a compendium of reports on local economic conditions from the 12 regional Federal Reserve banks.
The October edition, the most recent, reported this in its national summary about the U.S. labor market: ‘Demand for workers eased somewhat, with hiring focused primarily on replacement rather than growth. Worker availability improved, as many contacts reported it had become easier to find the workers they need.’
But also, there was this: ‘Contacts noted that it remained difficult to find workers with certain skills or in some industries, such as technology, manufacturing, and construction.’“

The US job market added fewer jobs than expected in February as unemployment unexpectedly rose 07.03.2025
· “The US added 151,000 jobs in February, fewer than expected.
· Unemployment unexpectedly ticked up to 4.1% from 4%.
· The new data will be useful for the Federal Reserve to decide whether to keep interest rates steady.”
ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey in Switzerland (undated) “Get an insight of Swiss employers' hiring plans for the 2nd quarter of 2024:
A look at the various sectors shows that new hires are planned in 8 of the 9 sectors surveyed. The highest net employment intentions are reported by companies in the following sectors: Healthcare and Life Sciences (44%), Finance and Real Estate (43%), Transport, Logistics and Automotive (42%), Consumer Goods and Services (41%). The "Communication Services" sector reported a negative employment forecast of -8%. With a value of 21%, companies in the IT sector recorded the lowest employment outlook since the beginning of 2022.”
U. S. Job market looks uncertain, despite decent job growth at the start of 2025 07.02.2025 “The U.S. labor market probably started 2025 the way it spent most of last year: generating decent, but unspectacular, job growth.
When the Labor Department releases January employment numbers Friday, they’re likely to show that companies, government agencies, and nonprofits added 170,000 jobs last month, according to a survey of economists by the data firm FactSet. That would be a respectable performance but also a downshift from 2024, which averaged 186,000 new jobs a month, including a surge of 256,000 in December. The unemployment rate is expected to remain low at 4.1%.”

U.S. Hiring Outlook - 2025 Salary Guide (undated) “2025 presents employers with a complex hiring landscape of skills shortages, open roles and pending projects at a time when labor pools are tight. Meanwhile, AI is changing job roles and skills needs. Yet many firms are slow to hire, jeopardizing productivity and revenues and risking the loss of skilled talent to competitors.
The bottleneck of pent-up demand could signal an approaching hiring boom. To thrive in this environment, managers must pay salaries that meet or beat market rates, fast-track the hiring process and, even more important today, offer flexible arrangements such as nontraditional schedules and fully remote or hybrid work options.“
Overlogix: Robert Half is a staffing company, and in our experience, not a particularly reputable one. The above report should be taken with a tablespoon of salt.
The Future of Jobs Report 2025 07.12.2025 “Technological change, the green transition, economic uncertainty, geoeconomic fragmentation and demographic shifts are reshaping the labour market. This chapter analyses how employers expect various kinds of jobs to grow and decline in response to these macrotrends and assesses the role of each of these trends in contributing to labour-market transformation.”
Overlogix: Since this report is by the World Economic Forum, we are cautious about believing anything in it. The WEC has a decidedly globalist agenda, which does not match what we are seeing.

Will Jobs Be Plentiful In 2025? 31.12.2025
· “Jobs are getting harder to find, a trend that could continue into the new year.
· There are fewer jobs available for every unemployed worker than before the pandemic, and the job finding rate has hit its lowest since the pandemic hit.
· Economists expect the job market to stay afloat despite the pullback because the economy is still running well despite high interest rates for loans slowing down business.”
2025 Labor Market Outlook 19.12.2024 “TL;DR: The most likely labor market outcome for 2024 is an end to the labor market cooling process we’ve experienced over the past 2.5 years.”

Microsoft and OpenAI: Break-up in Progress?
Overlogix: Rumors on X and LinkedIn that something is happening between Microsoft and OpenAI:
X: Microsoft OpenAI Note: This is a link to a search on X. Results of that search can be expected to change fairly rapidly.
LinkedIn: Microsoft OpenAI Note: This is a link to a search on LinkedIn. Results of that search can be expected to change fairly rapidly.
Overlogix: We are seeing rumors on X.com that Microsoft is distancing itself from OpenAI. Are there any in-depth, well-researched, critical articles that research the truth of this rumor?
Perplexity: Recent reports from credible tech publications and regulatory findings substantiate rumors that Microsoft is strategically distancing itself from OpenAI while maintaining their partnership. Here's an analysis of key developments:
Growing Technical Independence
1. Internal AI Development:
Microsoft has trained its "MAI" models, which reportedly match OpenAI's top models in benchmark performance. The company is testing these in Copilot while exploring alternatives from Meta, xAI, and DeepSeek. This technical decoupling gained urgency after OpenAI allegedly refused to share technical details about its o1 reasoning model.2. Infrastructure Shifts:
Microsoft restructured its cloud agreement with OpenAI in January 2025, abandoning exclusive cloud provider status in favor of a "first right of refusal" arrangement. This enables OpenAI to partner with Oracle and SoftBank on a $500B AI infrastructure project.
Regulatory & Competitive Pressures
3. Antitrust Scrutiny:
The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) closed its merger investigation after finding Microsoft's influence over OpenAI had diminished rather than increased. Key factors included:· Microsoft relinquishing board seat plans
· OpenAI's infrastructure diversification
4. Public Positioning:
Microsoft officially listed OpenAI as a competitor in its 2024 SEC filings, signalling a strategic shift from collaborator to rival in key AI markets.
Financial & Strategic Motivations
5. Cost Containment:
Internal documents reveal Microsoft seeks to reduce Copilot's operational costs by 20-30% through model diversification. OpenAI's ChatGPT reportedly costs Microsoft $0.80 per query versus $0.20 for in-house models.6. Market Expansion:
Plans to commercialize MAI models via API later in 2025 would directly compete with OpenAI's developer ecosystem. This follows Microsoft's $14B investment in OpenAI, which grants perpetual IP rights to the startup's models.
Critical Sources Analyzing the Split
Gizmodo (Source 4): Details technical tensions, including OpenAI's refusal to share model internals and Microsoft's cancelled data center leases.
TechCrunch (Source 8): Reveals Microsoft is testing four rival AI models in Copilot while accelerating MAI development.
InfoWorld (Source 7): Exposes internal struggles with MAI development, including talent departures and technical setbacks delaying releases.
PYMNTS (Source 6): Highlights Microsoft's strategic pivot to position OpenAI as a competitor rather than partner.
While the partnership remains intact for now, these developments suggest Microsoft is actively building redundancy against OpenAI's dominance. As noted by Fladgate's Alex Haffner: "The CMA decision masks fundamental shifts in what was once an exclusive symbiotic relationship". The diversification strategy appears driven by cost concerns, regulatory risk mitigation, and Microsoft's ambition to control core AI infrastructure.

US' Secretive X-37B Space Plane Returns To Earth After 434-Day Mission 11.03.2024 “The US government's top-secret X-37B space plane returned to Earth after a 434-day mission in orbit, a statement by the US Space Force (USSF) has revealed. The 29-foot-long X-37B landed at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California last Friday (Mar 7) at 2:22 am local time after completing its seventh mission.
‘The US Space Force landed the X-37B at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, to exercise its rapid ability to launch and recover its systems across multiple sites. X-37B's Mission 7 was the first launch on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy Rocket to a Highly Elliptical Orbit,’ read the USSF statement.
Though the details about the unmanned spacecraft's more-than-a-year-long mission have largely been kept under wraps, Chief of Space Operations General Chance Saltzman reiterated that the aircraft had achieved successful execution of the aerobraking manoeuvre.
‘Mission 7 broke new ground by showcasing the X-37B's ability to flexibly accomplish its test and experimentation objectives across orbital regimes," said General Saltzman.’

Microsoft Upgrade Deadline—Millions Of Windows Users Suddenly Switch 11.03.2025 “We are fast approaching a crunch point for Microsoft and hundreds of millions of users sticking with software that will no longer receive security updates. This unprecedented situation could lead to security nightmare for the company and for the millions left exposed to an increasingly dangerous cybersecurity landscape.
Microsoft’s free upgrade offer to Windows 11 remains open, albeit only for those with the right spec of PC. Combined with constant warnings and nags, it is finally putting a dent into the problem. February saw Windows 10 hit a new low, as tens of millions of users suddenly, finally switched to Windows 11, per the latest data from Statcounter.“
Overlogix: Heh. We think we know why, too. We’ve noticed our Windows 10 computer has recently started having freezing problems.
We’ve run every diagnostic on the machine we can find, and there are low to no problems reported. However, Windows updates still happen automatically, and we have exactly zero visibility into what those upgrades do. Can you connect the dots?
It wouldn’t surprise us at all to learn Microsoft is trying to nudge Windows 10 users to upgrade. If so, that’s a nasty way of doing business. We plan a thorough survey later in the spring on Windows alternatives, advantages and disadvantages.
Users of Windows 10 with certain kinds of digital licenses can upgrade to Windows 11 for free. We’ll dig into that later.
Also, has your Windows 10 system informed you that your computer isn’t good enough to upgrade to Windows 11? Ours has. There are workarounds, another topic we’ll cover later.

Nvidia sales grow 78% on AI demand, company gives strong guidance 26.02.2025
Nvidia reported fourth-quarter earnings after the bell on Wednesday that beat Wall Street expectations.
The company’s revenue in the quarter rose 78%, and full fiscal-year revenue for Nvidia rose 114% to $130.5 billion.
Nvidia said it expected about $43 billion in first-quarter revenue, plus or minus 2%, versus $41.78 billion expected per LSEG estimates.
Firefox deletes promise to never sell personal data, asks users not to panic 28.02.2025 “Firefox maker Mozilla deleted a promise to never sell its users' personal data and is trying to assure worried users that its approach to privacy hasn't fundamentally changed. Until recently, a Firefox FAQ promised that the browser maker never has and never will sell its users' personal data. An archived version from January 30 says:
Q: Does Firefox sell your personal data?
A: ‘Nope. Never have, never will. And we protect you from many of the advertisers who do. Firefox products are designed to protect your privacy. That's a promise.’
That promise is removed from the current version. There's also a notable change in a data privacy FAQ that used to say, ‘Mozilla doesn't sell data about you, and we don't buy data about you.’”
Overlogix: We stopped using Firefox years ago because it was so irritating to use; it frequently wouldn’t render web pages due to weird reasons like ‘outdated security certificate’. If you like the Firefox as a program, we recommend trying the Pale Moon browser, a security and privacy-minded re-spin of Firefox, that largely removes the annoying rendering behavior. We stick with the Brave browser, as it is good at removing annoying and time-wasting advertisements.

Understanding the Hidden Risks of AI Agent Adoption 10.3.2025 “AI agents promise to automate tasks and enhance efficiency, however they can also present unique security vulnerabilities. Here’s what to know.“
Overlogix: We’re very skittish about AI agents; we believe they became news a few months ago due to waning investor interest in AI (LLM) technology, and were “slapped together” to provide investors with “proof” that companies were applying AI to real-world problems. We published, and since updated, a quickie article, with references, explicitly naming the risks to using them. Security was definitely on the list.

AI made its way to vineyards. Here’s how the technology is helping make your wine 10.03.2025 “LOS ANGELES (AP) — When artificial intelligence-backed tractors became available to vineyards, Tom Gamble wanted to be an early adopter. He knew there would be a learning curve, but Gamble decided the technology was worth figuring out.
The third-generation farmer bought one autonomous tractor. He plans on deploying its self-driving feature this spring and is currently using the tractor’s AI sensor to map his Napa Valley vineyard. As it learns each row, the tractor will know where to go once it is used autonomously. The AI within the machine will then process the data it collects and help Gamble make better-informed decisions about his crops — what he calls ‘precision farming.’
‘It’s not going to completely replace the human element of putting your boot into the vineyard, and that’s one of my favorite things to do,’ he said. ‘But it’s going to be able to allow you to work more smartly, more intelligently and in the end, make better decisions under less fatigue.’“

Manufacturing is a big consumer of automation, for obvious reasons, and, having worked in manufacturing, we know they don’t have time to fool around with complicated coding. They are interested in making things, not getting bogged down with overcomplicated technology, so, if you want to keep your jobs, get to know the people who do it every day, what they need, and, most important, what they don’t need. Your future employment condition will thank you.

LinkedIn Free Version: An Analysis for Small Businesses 10.03.2025 Our detailed and thorough analysis of what small businesses can expect to accomplish via the free version of LinkedIn, and, more importantly, what has been monetized and is no longer practically within reach of small businesses.
Given the very large amount of daily hype pushed out by unscrupulous actors on LinkedIn, frequently and loudly proclaiming that LinkedIn is still the greatest thing to happen since sliced cheese, we take a blunt, experienced and unemotional deep dive into what can and cannot be done on the platform.
TL;DR version: some, necessary, but not enough to meaningfully market a small business. LinkedIn has to be paid for more, but we can’t see justification for their exorbitant fees and ad pricing. A must-read for all small business employing LinkedIn as part of their marketing strategy.

Installation and configuration of Microsoft SQL Server in Linux We asked Claude to help us through this unfamiliar topic and documented the results. Since we need this for a client, the installation is rather urgent and so has been prioritized.
This project, like the below Gemini migration, demonstrates a practical use case for AGI candidates like Claude. While we cannot claim that the process is rapid, the results appear to be thorough and complete. Once we complete the implementation successfully, we’ll publish the detailed results on our Substack and a summary on LinkedIn.
Migration project using Google Gemini to produce the implementation and configuration steps. We’ve been developing, for our own purposes, an internal wiki built on the same platform as Wikipedia, MediaWiki. The wiki has outgrown the el-cheapo XAMPP Windows installation and must be migrated to our newly rebuilt Linux server.
The interesting part is that we’re using Google Gemini as our research concierge and assistant for this project, and will publish the article as soon as we get the system up and running. The important point is that we know only superficial facts about this implementation and its several components, and relied on Gemini to tell us how to do it.
FYI: the process has taken weeks, and is neither simple nor trivial. There has to be an adult in the room!
Our article on Aggressive Development Schedules is still in development; there is so much to write about that we are having a hard time reducing it to the size of a single article.

Business: Improving Your LinkedIn Feed Long-Term 25.1.2025 Yes, your LinkedIn feed is full of garbage. No, it’s not going to change anytime soon. This article explains several ways to systematically improve your LinkedIn feed. So far, one cannot get rid of all the garbage, but you can get rid of some of it on an ongoing basis and make LI a more useful tool.
Conventional Job Hunting Advice; Job Hunting / Skills Training Scams: LinkedIn's Snake Oil Merchants 12.01.2025 Twenty (20) actions job seekers should be using now. Unfortunately, this advice, while sound, only goes so far. The job market is bad enough right now to warrant intense levels of personal networking, all the while continuing to pump out as many crafted CVs for each published job description as possible. It’s a nightmare; we’re sorry it is that way, but can’t change it by ourselves.
Proactive Talent Acquisition: A Strategic Imperative 10.8.2024 Hiring appears to be completely broken almost everywhere. We suspect this is a combination of a weak job market, typically caused by thumb-fingered government meddling in the economy, outdated and poorly written tax code, over-application by desperate job seekers and overuse of (likely ill-tuned) applicant tracking systems (ATS).
When clearly qualified applicants receive automated rejection notices, despite having 100% of the listed skills, and see the same job listings posted repeatedly, what do you think they conclude about the company? For us, that company goes on our private list of incompetent and toxic companies. Think about that, read your ATS manuals, and learn how to operate the things!
In this in-depth article, we present relatively simple solutions to proactive hiring, completely bypassing job boards and ATS as filters for incoming CVs. Quality talent acquisition is a science, not an art.
Business: The Artificial Intelligence Hype Cycle 13.6.2024 The majority of AI news, announcements, products, what have you, are simply hype: attempts to influence people to purchase ineffective products and services through FOMO. Practically speaking, it is actually quite difficult and expensive to get any serious business value out of artificial intelligence, for a variety of reasons. The single largest, in our opinion, is that the technology just isn’t all that valuable. It certainly isn’t developed to the point that people can use it with confidence, and there have been high-profile incidents where a newbie used it for a critical purpose and got into trouble for it.
Computers Are Stupid 12.2.2024 Just a reminder article that your computer cannot and does not think. “Thinking machines” is an expression, not a fact. It’s better to think of your computers as overgrown calculators.
